One of the greatest historical achievements of the Art Basel Fair is its depth and breadth of presentation. This show was conceived in the 1970s as a place where art could have an international connectedness. Originally, Art Basel attracted 16,000 attendees, 90 galleries, and 30 publishers from 10 countries. Its growth is reminiscent of the diversity of the Miami social and cultural scene and is an annually anticipated gem of an event.

The growth of Art Basel was largely layered. By the 1980s, in celebration of 150 years of photography, the medium was added as a core platform of the show. In this period, the show debuted in Miami Beach and housed 160 galleries from 23 countries and welcomed 30,000 visitors.
